How to choose the best charger for iPhone and Samsung

Watts: how much power does your phone need?

A charger only delivers what the phone asks for, so a higher-watt charger is safe, but the phone will not charge faster than its own limit. Apple says iPhone 15 and later fast charge with an 18W or higher USB-C adapter that supports USB Power Delivery (USB-PD). For iPhone 17, 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max, Apple quotes up to 50% in around 20 minutes with a 40W adapter or higher; for iPhone 17e and iPhone Air, up to 50% in around 30 minutes with 20W or higher. On the Samsung side, base Galaxy S models use 25W fast charging, while models such as the S22 and S23 Plus and Ultra support 45W Super Fast Charging, so check your model first.

Charging standards: PD for iPhone, PPS for Samsung

The best Type-C charger is one that "speaks" your phone's protocol. iPhones use USB Power Delivery (PD). Samsung says its Super Fast Charging is based on Power Delivery 3.0, and its own 25W adapter lists PPS (Programmable Power Supply), so Galaxy phones need a PPS charger to reach their fast mode. A charger that lists both PD and PPS covers iPhone and Samsung in one plug.

GaN chargers: smaller and cooler

GaN (gallium nitride) switches power more efficiently than traditional silicon parts, so GaN chargers are smaller than older chargers of the same power and waste less energy as heat. UGREEN's Nexode chargers and the JOYROOM 45W in this guide use GaN.

Ports and power sharing

A multi-port charger shares its total power between ports. A 65W charger can give the full 65W to a laptop on one USB-C port, then re-divide the power when you add a phone. For a laptop and a phone from one plug choose 65W or more; for a phone only, a single-port 20W to 45W charger is enough.

Safety: how to tell an original charger

The accessories market is full of copies, and a fake charger may skip protection parts and overheat. Buy from a known store, check that the model number on the box matches the charger and the brand's product page, and avoid chargers with blurry printing, a loose plug or no clear brand. The UGREEN chargers on our list state protection against over-voltage, over-current, overheating and short circuits. Stop using any charger that gets very hot or smells of burning.

UGREEN Nexode S 65W 3-Port (X553)

Good for: offices and families charging laptops, tablets and phones together.

Best wireless chargers

A Qi2-certified magnetic charger can deliver up to 15W to supported iPhones, about twice the 7.5W of standard Qi charging. For iPhone 16, iPhone 17 and iPhone Air, Apple recommends a 30W or higher adapter for MagSafe charging. Galaxy phones that support wireless charging work with Qi pads, but magnetic chargers need a magnetic case on models without built-in magnets.

UGREEN MagFlow 2-in-1 Qi2 (W706)

A Qi2-certified foldable charger that gives an iPhone 13 to 16 up to 15W and AirPods 5W at the same time. It works as a 0 to 70 degree stand and holds the phone with N52 magnets (MagSafe case or no case). A 1 m USB-C cable is included; the wall charger is not, and UGREEN recommends one above 30W.

Good for: iPhone and AirPods owners, at home or when travelling.

UGREEN 15W Magnetic Wireless Charger (W703)

A magnetic pad rated up to 15W for Qi-compatible devices, with an aluminum casing and a braided nylon cable. UGREEN lists iPhone 16 to 12 and AirPods with a charging case.

Good for: a bedside station for iPhone, Apple Watch and AirPods.

Best charging cables for iPhone and Samsung

iPhone 15 and newer use USB-C, while iPhone 14 and older use Lightning, so check your port first. A cable has its own power limit: a 60W (3A) cable covers most phones, while Samsung 45W charging and laptops above 60W need a 5A cable with an E-Marker chip.

UGREEN MFi USB-C to Lightning, 2 m (US304)

Apple MFi certified with the original C94 Lightning connector, so iOS shows no "accessory not supported" message. It supports 20W PD fast charging with a USB-C PD charger, in a 2 m nylon-braided cable. It fits iPhone 14, 13, 12, 11 and SE, not iPhone 15 and later.

Charging tips

  • Match the charger to the phone: PD for iPhone, PD with PPS for Samsung.
  • On Galaxy phones, make sure fast charging is on in the battery settings; Samsung notes it cannot be changed while charging.
  • Apple notes fast charging might not work when it is too hot or too cold, so avoid charging in a hot car.
  • For wireless charging, use a MagSafe-compatible case or no case.
  • Replace frayed cables and do not cover a charger while it works.
